The Road Trip Begins...

So the road trip has started and after 2 days we have almost covered a thousand miles, we began downtown in Seattle where we had once again booked the cheapest car available a couple of months ago but was upgraded to an SUV Jeep which is really easy and fun to drive.

The first day was an 8 hour drive south east to Boise on a stop over for lunch in a little town called Kennewick we noticed a sign to a 9/11 memorial. A few miles down we saw a tall metal structure by the side of the road. When we got to it we found it was a 35ft high piece of the twin towers dedicated to those lost and only opened September this year (see photo).

We reached Boise as the sun was setting and changed our watches as we passed our first time zone and went forward an hour. The next day we were up early for the 7 hour drive to Salt Lake City, we detoured south to visit the famous Bonneville Salt Flats. This is most famous for where the world land speed records have been set with cars reaching over 600mph. For movie lovers it is also the place where films such as Independence Day and Pirates of the Caribbean were shot.

There are no speed restrictions on the salt flats itself so we were looking forward to ragging the jeep , unfortunately as we made it out to the salty wilderness we quickly saw that the salt flats have already flooded over for the Winter and according to the sign they don't dry out until Spring. The views were amazing and a real sense of calm as you are miles from anywhere. So not ones to be defeated we had our own race along the 4 mile stretch of road to see who could go the faster.

I went first and broke 100mph and then chickened out and slowed down, Kris however broke 110mph and I had to remind him the car only went to 120mph and I didnt fancy blowing the engine in the middle of nowhere, so Kris claimed victory.

A few hours later we returned to civilisation in Salt Lake City, home to the largest Mormon Church and community in the world. So we headed downtown where we wandered through the temple grounds and then onto the Utah State Capitol building. Needless to say we collapsed in bed last night after such a long day.
