Pearl Harbour

Kris and I got off the beach for a day to do a tour of Pearl Harbour, we were picked up early morning and taken about half hour along the coast to the famous harbour.

The first thing you see when you get to the car park is the white memorial building out on the water. Once we got into the memorial area I realised from the map that the white building is situated over the USS Arizona ship that was sunk by the Japanese.

The first stop was a 30 minute eye opening video on the events leading up to and the morning of the Japanese bombing on December 7th 1941. We then boarded the boat that took us over to the memorial where it acts as a bridge floating over the mid section of the sunken ship where over a 1000 servicemen died and remain.

Once back on land we took a walk along the harbour reading some of the stories and various monuments that have been built to honour all those that died that day. Once again it was a very humbling trip and we will both remember the weird calmness of the harbour for a long time.

On the way back our driver took us on a tour of Honolulu before driving through a navy version of Arlington Cemetary dedicated to all those lost at sea in the Pacific.

It was a great trip giving us a taste of some of the history Hawaii has to offer.

Thought provoking - a bit like visiting the Vietnam Wall Memorial in DC. Looking forward to knocking off another three hours on the time difference and catching up with you soon. X
