Milford Sound

After our eventful trip in Queenstown we had stopped over in Te Anau on the south west corner of New Zealand this was so we could make the trip to Milford Sound which is a Fiord (cut out by a glacier). To get to Milford Sound you have to take the most dangerous road in New Zealand which is often shut through winter. No pressure for the driver.

The highway authority update everyday the condition of the road and risk of avalanche as the steep road winds round the snowy mountains and often is prone to avalanches. All vehicles have to carry snow chains and the day before we went were required to wear them. But the weather was on our side we woke up to beautiful sunshine and set off on the 2 hour journey.

It is one of the most scenic journeys I have ever experienced cutting through the mountains, I wasn't so sure about the 1.5km tunnel which you pass through the mountain especially as it had almost no lighting and looked like someone had dug it out with a spoon!

Once we had arrived on the west coast tip of New Zealand we took a scenic cruise through the mountains seeing some beautiful waterfalls until we emerged out at sea. We turned round and wound our way back seeing a pod of 10 dolphins on route and seals sunbathing on the rocks before making the windy journey out of the Fiordland back to Te Anau.
